Swiss National Day Picnic 2016

A Picture Perfect Day

Swiss Flag

It was the perfect day for a picnic at the Roseville Central Park on Victoria Street in Roseville. Our American and Swiss Flags were flying, happy Swiss musik was playing, the brats and the hot dogs were grilling, and our helpers were willing. The stage was set for a wonderful day for a Swiss gathering!

The shared dessert table was groaning with calories and we sampled it all. Just like Swiss clock work, at 1:25 p.m., the American and the Swiss Anthems were playing, and those who knew the words sang along. With the Alphorn duo Steve and Timm’s Swiss melodies we felt as if we were indeed in the Swiss mountains.

The “Fahnen Schwingen” added more nostalgia to our gathering with flags catching the sun as Society members waved a tribute to our homeland. Some of the members also tried their skill at the “Talerschwingen”… with a Swiss Franc rolling around in a “Teigschüßel”, reverberating with a sound like cowbells. (“Teigschüßel” literally translates as “dough knitting bowl” and it is also used as cream separating bowl.)

The Swiss mountain men passed their spare time during the long cheese-making months practicing their talent in “Talerschwingen” also adding their Swiss yodel to the activity.

“Crash”, our Swiss clown, has been bringing joy to our picnics for about 33 years. We know folks look forward to seeing her. We thank her Big Time!

Big thanks to all our members who attended and helped make our Swiss Picnic a success. We hope to see you all in 2017. It's usually during the second or third weekend in August. The actual date will be known in early January.
